Throwback Thursday: Man overboard!

Shortly after this photo was taken we almost lost Mom overboard. Or was it Dad?

Man, that would have made for a better story!

Now the signs have eyes!

Maybe googly eyes on a squirrel wasn't such a bad idea after all!
I think we could be on to something here....

The eyes have it

Back in high school the "cool kids" took a sportsman's biology class their senior year. The un-cool kids took fun classes like chemistry. Bet you can't guess which class I took!

So Ted was in sportsman's bio and one assignment was on taxidermy. Yes- stuffing something that used to be alive. Like any good hunter Ted decided to stuff a squirrel. Yes- one of those fluffy little things that run around the yard. One day my mom received a call from Ted asked if she had any googly eyes. You know- those crafty eyes that wiggle and jiggle? Yes- those eyes. I suppose its natural for a child care provider to have those on hands so Ted and his buddies headed right home to get them. Nothing thinking much more of it we all kind of forgot about the whole thing.

Until "It" came home.

"It" was a stuffed squirrel. With googly eyes. IN ITS NOSTRILS! We were all so stunned by the look of "It" that none of us noticed the inappropriately placed eyes. It was one of dad's friends that pointed it out the nostril faux pas at Ted's graduation.

I wish we still had the "It", or at least several dozen pictures of the monstrosity. Sadly I think one of the cat's got it. Can't blame the cat for trying to put "It" out of "It's" misery once and for all.

Independence Day

Josie has been telling us how grown up she is and how she's ready to be allowed to do more things. Recently her most frequent request is for permission to travel out of sight of Brent or I. She has specifically requested permission to ride her bike from our cul de sac into the neighboring cul de sac. After a (lengthy) discussion I decided she she was up for it. She did just fine and even thanked me for trusting her.

Imagine my surprise when she asked me to spend some time alone at Target. And imagine both of our surprise when I said yes! I figured that 30 minutes of "just looking" was pretty reasonable for an almost 8 year old. I coached on what to say if she needed anything or if those pesky Target employees bothered her for being there without a parent. She seemed to understand the rules and could recite my name and phone number so off we went!

We agreed that I'd drop her off and then drive back home. When 30 minutes was up I'd meet her at the front door by the grocery section to pick her up. With a kiss on the head she hopped out of the van and skipped into the store. I could not believe how grown up she looked!

When Josie's time was done I drove up to the door and she was already outside waiting for me. She quickly hurried to the van and hopped in but some crazy lady followed behind Josie and was shouting at me and pounding on my window. The lady was yelling something about a child, and being alone, and it not being safe. I'm mean really lady...this kid just spent 30 minutes in Target by herself. You don't think she can handle a parking lot? I just shook my head and drove away.

So all in all Josie has made pretty big strides toward being independent. I'm proud of her.

The Target portion of this post has been brought to you by fever induced nightmares from when Heather was sick. In bed. For many, many days. No children were truly left alone in Target for the sake of this post.

Big Like Bull

Brent always tells us he's "big like bull" when we ask him to help move something.
I think he's full of bull and Josie is on to something better:

Big Like Swing Set!

Throwback Thusday: Three weeks

Long time, no see. I should catch you up.

Father's Day happened. I was sick in bed. But I have some great guys in my life and was sure to acknowledge them. From my bed. Where I was sick. Thanks again for all that you do Dad, Denny and Brent.

My dad's birthday happened. I was sick in bed. But I made sure to acknowledge him. From my bed. Where I was sick. I have a pretty fantastic Dad and was glad to surprise him with this. Of course that didn't happen until I was not sick in bed.

June 16-22 happened. I was sick in bed. Several doctor visits occurred and load of prescription and non-prescription drugs were administered. Even a culture for whooping cough happened. I highly recommend you avoid that test at all costs. Luckily it was negative so I just had some sort of knock you in your ass, cough till you puke and/or pee, run a high fever, take you down for 10 day "viral junk". Yes, that was my official diagnosis. Luckily I'm back to my old self again.

Then vacation happened. More accurately it's still happening. There's been games, fishing, reading,  beaches and relaxing. Looking forward to more fun as the whole family will be together for the 4th.

So there you go. That sums up our past few weeks. You can stop worrying about us now.
